“103rd Samuel Maharero commemoration this weekend

Chief Tjinaani Maharero of the Maharero Traditional Authority and head of the Otjikatjamuaha Royal House has called for unity within the Ovaherero community ahead of the 103rd Chief Samuel Maharero Commemoration this weekend in Okahandja.

The Ovaherero community and Namibians nationwide will converge in Okahandja from Friday to Sunday to mark the 103rd anniversary of the return of the paramount chief’s remains on 23 August 1923, following his death in exile in Botswana five months earlier.

Speaking to Nampa yesterday, Chief Maharero said “this sacred gathering rises above current leadership disputes”.

This year’s commemoration also aims to address the tensions related to the Genocide Joint Declaration, marking a significant step towards healing community divisions.

Chief Maharero announced that a focused panel discussion will unite opposing factions.

“With the ongoing genocide negotiations and several camps divided on the joint declaration, we saw it important to invite both the Joint Declaration committee and leaders opposing it to come together under one roof to discuss the way forward,” Maharero remarked.

This is the third time within about a month that OvaHerero gather for a commemoration in Okahandja. Known as Red Flag Day, this annual commemoration refers to the burial of the mortal remains of Paramount Chief Samuel Maharero. It had been established and driven by late Paramount Chief Hosea Kutako as from 1923.

Samuel Maharero died on 14 March 1923 in exile in Serowe, Bechuanaland (today Botswana). His remains were repatriated to South West Africa (today Namibia) and interred in Okahandja from 23 to 26 August 1923 (see also the article on Wikipedia, that may contain unverified information).

The OvaHerero Traditional Authority (OTA) under Paramount Chief Hozé Riruako held its commemoration ‘Otjiserandu’ on 17 to 19 July 2026. Otjiserandu means Red Flag.

The date refers to the day of Paramount Chief Hosea Kutako’s passing. Kutako died on 18 July 1970 at the age of 100 in the Aminuis Reserve (see also the Wikipedia article, that may contain unverified information).

The OvaHerero Traditional Authority (OTA) under Paramount Chief Mutjinde Katjiua originally scheduled their ‘OvaHerero Commemoration Day’ on the same weekend. The event premises of the two OTA factions are located right next to each other. To avoid conflict, Katjiua’s faction postponed its event to the weekend 24 – 26 July 2026.

The procession of the original Red Flag Commemoration visits the graves of Samuel Maharero, his father Kamaharero and his grandfather Tjamuaha. Then it proceeds to the graves of succeeding Paramount Chiefs and other Chiefs. Neither of the two OTA factions visited the Maharero family graves during their processions.
