Recording of the discussion

Text from NID’s Instagram post:

“[W]e gathered for our first Intergenerational Dialogue under Threads to Remembrance initiative, and what unfolded was both powerful and necessary.

Together with @xamques and Dr. Basilius Kasera, we unpacked the pervasiveness of language erasure in Namibia, how colonial histories disrupted memory, silenced indigenous knowledge systems, and fractured intergenerational transmission.

We also reflected on our collective duty to reclaim language, restore dignity, and strengthen the communities that carry memory forward. Language is not simply a tool for communication, it is archive, identity, worldview, and belonging.

We were especially privileged to be joined by members of the San community, who deepened the dialogue by sharing lived realities of continued marginalisation. Their reflections reminded us that cultural erasure is not just historical, it is ongoing, and it demands urgent, inclusive action.”
