“Remembrance culture and commemoration

“Our awareness of the value of freedom and democracy is also based on our culture of remembrance. At its heart is the examination of Nazi criminal rule and the singularity of the Shoah. We are also strengthening the reappraisal of the SED dictatorship, including the confiscation of cultural assets in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) and the GDR [German Democratic Republic]. The relevant Bundestag resolutions require us to take concrete action. We will intensify our efforts to come to terms with colonialism. This includes cross-border research into objects and the return of cultural property in dialogue with the countries of origin. Particular attention is being paid to creating a dignified place of remembrance and the return of human remains.”

“Erinnerungskultur und Gedenken

Unser Bewusstsein für den Wert von Freiheit und Demokratie beruht auch auf unserer Erinnerungskultur. In ihrem Mittelpunkt steht die Auseinandersetzung mit der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechensherrschaft und der Singularität der Shoah. Zudem stärken wir die Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur, einschließlich des Kulturgutentzugs in Sowjetischer Besatzungszone (SBZ) und DDR. Die entsprechenden Bundestagsbeschlüsse erfordern von uns eine konkrete Umsetzung. Die Aufarbeitung des Kolonialismus werden wir intensivieren. Dazu gehört eine länderübergreifende Erforschung von Objekten und die Rückgabe von Kulturgütern im Dialog mit den Herkunftsländern. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf einem würdigen Erinnerungsort und der Rückgabe menschlicher Überreste (Human Remains).”
