Dennoch wurde er nicht nur zum Begründer des deutschen Kolonialreiches, sondern auch zu einer zentralen Figur bei der Aufteilung Afrikas im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert.”

Translation into English by the editor:

“Bismarck opposed any German colonial adventure and did not believe in the economic promises of overseas possessions. Nevertheless, he became not only the founder of the German colonial empire but also a central figure in the partitioning of Africa at the end of the 19th century.”
